One Day Art Project

This is from a recent project in school called “One Day” where I created an art piece with my friend Nichole. Our Goal was to each draw a hand and then combine them into one art piece. During this process, there were many challenges like our different drawing styles and the way two pieces of paper would connect. I drew my hand more geometrical and smooth while hers was more realistic and rough. In the end, I believe our different drawing styles created contrast and we were successful in completing this art project. This art piece represents the relationship between distinct classes. The rings on the hand above signify wealth and status while the bandages on the bony hand below represent poverty and hunger.
Constrained

This is an art piece inspired by a South-African artist named William Kentridge and a Japanese artist named Chiharu Shiota. I used charcoal pencils and blending stumps to create most of the art piece and then used a red pen to draw the lines and markings on top. This image gives a rough feeling from the lines and the blurred human figure. However, the contrast is very intense in the dark and light portions of it. In “Constrained”, the bird is flying toward the light while the human figure is reaching for the bird. The light that the bird flies toward represents freedom. Meanwhile, chasing the Bird signifies our will and longing for it. However, the human seems to fail on leaping over the fence to reach the bird. The red lines also wrapped around his body tightly and pulled him back. These lines are just like society’s connections, constraints, and rules that confine us in a zone where we try to cross and break the boundaries just like this human figure.
My First Original Anime Character Outline on Photoshop

This is an outline of a boy character wearing a jacket. It was challenging to draw one arm out of the jacket but I still managed to complete this in less than two days. After trying to learn digital arts by myself, I would draw on Photoshop almost every day. I have only drawn on paper before so it took time for me to familiarize myself with the Wacom tablet and operations on PS. During this process, I learned more about how to draw the body and facial structures, hair, and even wrinkles on clothes. In the end, I have experienced great improvement from when I just started and I hope I could continue to improve over the Chinese New Year break.
